“You can always go further than you think you are capable of.”

ABOUT ME

My name is Caleb. I began riding a bike just like every other kid growing up in East Texas, for fun and to take me places, a necessity and means for adventure. From the time I got my driver’s licenses until about six years ago, I might have ridden a bike twice. Life happens and things change.

In 2010 I was out of shape, and I smoked almost a pack of cigarettes a day and my diet was nothing short of laughable. I had an eye-opening experience when my father had a heart attack. The realization of a family history with heart trouble really put things in motion. Enough was enough.

I tried running, but I hated it. I knew in order to be motivated, I needed to do something I would enjoy. I bought a mountain bike.

When I first starting riding, I was lucky to ride 4 miles on the trail, and it would kill me. It was painful, my legs hurt, my chest ached. But I absolutely loved it. At that time, I couldn’t even imagine riding a mountain bike for more than an hour much less 20 miles. How on earth could I ever ride that far? Then one day I did. Then again. Then 30. Then 50. I entered some races. Then I joined a mountain bike team. I raced during in 107° heat, during the freezing cold, through the night, even for 24 hours in a canyon.

But I couldn’t have done it alone. I have made everlasting friends in the bike community that pushed me. I have an incredible coach who has guided me to being stronger than I have ever been. And lastly, have a wife who supports me 110%, makes sure I am fed and hydrated, and has the patience of which I could never comprehend. None of this would have been possible without her love and support.

All of this has taught me two things — you can always go further than you think, and you can do even more with the support of others. Now, I am asking for your help to help others. On October 8, 2018 I will be participating in the RAT1000, a self-supported bicycle race through 1000 miles of unpaved, rural Texas roads from Texarkana, Texas to Tucumcari, New Mexico.

I want to use this opportunity to help others. That is why I am partnering with APEC Adaptive Foundation. This 501c3 provides free training systems, experiences, and overall support for kids, athletes, adults and veterans affected by, but not limited to: spina bifida, amputation, brain injury, military injury and poverty. A small amount of your financial support could be the difference that empowers someone to become their best self.
